NADWORNY: "The Woman In The Library" is set in Boston, Mass., and it takes place as the weather is turning cold, which means that the four characters, there's a lot of scenes where they're cooking warm dinners together, ordering takeout, making lots of hot coffee. And so it seemed to me that putting people in the same room and letting them experience something as heartrending as a disembodied scream might start a friendship which otherwise would not have happened. And I think I was probably very cognizant of the idea that there was a sort of - a kind of a special bond that was built up by that shared distress. And there was three families living there. So we were evacuated, and I was at the time sitting in what I call the refugee house, which was a little house that was lent to the people who had been displaced. And I live in a town which was absolutely smashed by the bushfires. SULARI GENTILL: At the time I was writing this, of course, I was sitting in Australia in the middle of the bushfires. That's the premise of Sulari Gentill's new mystery, titled "The Woman In The Library." When I spoke with her this past week, she said the idea of strangers bonding during scary events came from her own life experience. Later, a body is found, and the four characters quickly become friends as they work to piece together what happened. Four strangers are sitting in the reading room of the Boston Public Library quietly working when a woman's scream pierces the silence.

I’m not sure he’d approve, but I’ve been thinking of Cal Newport’s new book, Digital Minimalism, as a similar kind of instruction for tidying up our digital lives. Our house is still full of the things we love most-we’ve kept most of our books and records and art and childrens’ toys-but we found we were able to rid it of many, many minivan sized loads of stuff we’d accumulated. I have always kind of enjoyed clutter, so I never realized how much I’d appreciate not having so much of it-kind of like how I’ve always enjoyed doing the dishes, and didn’t realize how much I’d enjoy not doing them until we got a dishwasher. People love to hate, and they will, but my wife and I have been slowly and deliberately working our way through her process for the past few months, and I can’t tell you how often it feels as if a burden has been lifted when we finish one section or another. Marie Kondo’s Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is all the rage once again, thanks to her new Netflix show. This sounds absolutely like the perfect book for me-The Great Gatsby, believe it or not, has long been one of my favorite books, and I was particularly intrigued by the promises of a gothic atmosphere intertwined with a sapphic romance and charming young boys broken by his father’s whims. She navigates a world of parties and gems and drugs and soon enough finds herself caught in the pull of it, thrashing in the tides, desperate to get herself out even as each part of her is called to Jonathon’s quiet joys and, in particular, Audrey’s charm and resilience. Tripping Arcadia follows med school dropout and poison nerd Helena as she’s hired to work for a rich family as the caretaker of their chronically ill son, a boy rumored to be addicted to alcohol and cruel as a viper. And, of course, I loved our relationship: our main character Lena’s with rich siblings Audrey and Jonathon in particular. Kit Mayquist’s writing is absolutely, entirely gorgeous, descriptive and vivid and dark, with each word carrying a certain weight. Sapphic characters and twisted, broken boys speckle this book like stars in the night sky-or, aptly, like the poisons dotting the pages of this book-and bring to life a world which I enjoyed and despised in equal measure. What can I say about it? An atmospheric debut, reminiscent of THE GREAT GATSBY, with raging parties and drugs and alcohol galore. |
